Balmas tapped for new GOP role

Balmas Balmas Carl Balmas, the Amherst Republican Committee chairman, on Jan. 1 will begin serving a new role as vice chairman for towns with the Erie County GOP.

Balmas, who was elected to his current position in 2012, said he will resign the post with the ARC effective Sunday, Dec. 31.

An Army veteran and lifelong community advocate, Balmas detailed the resignation and new role on Dec. 20 in a letter to ARC members.

Balmas said that responsibilities of his new post include providing support to town committees throughout Erie County.

“It has been my honor and privilege to serve the Amherst Republican Party as chairman for the past five years and I will cherish the friendships I’ve enjoyed,” Balmas said in the letter. “The time is right to pass the baton to a younger generation to lead our Town party into the future.”

Joe Heins, the ARC’s first vice chairman, will assume the chairmanship pursuant to the committee’s rules.

“I would like to thank Chairman Balmas for his many years of service to our country and our town,” Heins said. “I look forward to working with him to ensure that the Amherst Republican Committee remains a vital pillar of our community — holding elected officials accountable, protecting the interests of our residents and promoting responsible solutions to the challenges facing our town.”
