Bicentennial kickoff event set for Jan.19

The official kickoff of the Town of Amherst bicentennial celebration has been scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, in the Council Chambers at the Amherst Municipal Building, 5583 Main St., Williamsville.

The kickoff celebration, led by the Amherst Bicentennial Commission, will include greetings from bicentennial co-chairmen Herbert Schmidt and Dave Sherman.

According to commission officials, additional festivities consist of a gigantic birthday cake and a presentation of 200 proclamations from elected officials and municipalities throughout the world.

Founded in 1818, the Town of Amherst, New York, celebrates its 200th year of incorporation this year.

Town officials will mark its 200th anniversary with a series of celebrations throughout the year.

Other facets of the bicentennial celebration year include historic walking tours, a slogan contest, interclub service luncheon and Bicentennial Gala.

Additionally, a subcommittee of the Amherst 2018 Bicentennial Committee is seeking to make this year’s Old Home Days parade larger than in recent years, coinciding with the bicentennial.

The Old Home Days parade will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 10.

Anyone who may be part of a town-based organization and wishes to participate in the parade may call 633-7236.
